Rounded Rectangle: Hargrave and Huxley

Six miles south-east of Chester, between the roads to Whitchurch (A41) and Nantwich (A51) lie the villages of Hargrave and Huxley.

Each village has its own Parish Council but they are united under one Ecclesiastical Parish of Hargrave which has encouraged joint activities and a thriving community spirit. This is particularly demonstrated by the annual Happy Days event over the last weekend in June with the highlight being the traditional fete on Saturday afternoon at Hargrave Church field. This also coincides with a Bowling Club match held on the green adjacent to the playing field.

There are two churches - St Peter's, Hargrave and St Andrew's, Huxley and a Methodist Chapel in Huxley. There are also two dwelling houses which used to be Methodist chapels. The Wesleyan Methodist chapel in Hargrave was closed in 1980 and the New Connection Methodist chapel in Huxley was closed in 1906.

Hargrave School was closed in 1954 and is now used as the village hall. The Huxley C of E Primary School continues to serve the two villages and others from further a field who want to partake of the excellent quality of teaching.

There is an active Local History Group, who have published a second updated edition of a local history book, “A History of Hargrave and Huxley” comprising over 170 pages including numerous colour photographs. Copies are available from Mrs M. Barrow, The Vicarage, Church Lane, Hargrave, Chester, CH3 7RN priced at £12.00 plus £1.95 p&p.
